Health Promoting Schools
Healthy children, kura and schools
Improving the health and wellbeing of children is an effective way to improve learning outcomes and nurture a healthy community.
At Toi Te Ora - Public Health Service our vision is for all schools, early childhood centres and kohanga reo to become health promoting environments, involving the whole school community in activities that promote health and wellbeing.
Toi Te Ora - Public Health Service Health Promoting Schools (HPS) programme is a community development approach which responds to the prioritised needs and solutions that have been identified by the whole school community. In addition:
HPS focuses on those who are experiencing the greatest inequities
HPS works by shifting the whole school community’s knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours and creating supportive environments
HPS advisors will help deliver support in schools in partnership with education, health and social service providers
HPS also builds on what schools already know and do, based on the school’s existing planning, review and reporting cycles.

The Health Promoting Schools newsletter is sent out twice a year to all schools in the Bay of Plenty and Lakes region.
